Justin Masterson made his first start of 2009 and pitched 5 1/3 solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks, and securing his first victory. But the offensive explosion that resulted in a 12-1 shellacking of the O's over shadowed the young pitcher's big day...
The top of the order lead the charge with Jacoby Ellsbury leading off with three hits and a stolen base, Dustin Pedroia going 4 for 6 with three RBI and David Ortiz going 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI.
Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek also had multi-hit games that included Varitek's 3rd ding dong of the season and Lowell's team leading 12th and 13th RBI. Kevin Youkilis was quiet, but walked three times.
Bottom Line: A four game series with the Orioles was apparently just what the doctor ordered for the Red Sox. They jumped from last in the AL East to second - two games behind the red hot Blue Jays... it's early, but it's noce to see them out of the cellar.
They'll play a two game set with the Twins before hosting the Yankees this weekend.
