Adam Kilgore is running a live blog from today's game. Here are some notes:
Josh Beckett looked sharp throwing a 1-2-3 first inning and 22 pitches total - 15 for strikes. Kilgore said he was throwing a pretty even mix of breaking balls and heat.
Clay Buchholz also had a 1-2-3 third with two grounders and a strike out. Six pitches total, 5 for strikes.
Francona on Junichi "Tazawa-bunga!" :
"He's a kid that's making so many adjustments, and he's done a great job. I look at it sometimes, here's a kid his age, coming from a different country, coming from an industrial league to boot, what must be going through his head? And he seems to handle it just fine."
In the 4th - Rocco Baldelli made a nice play in left, sprinting to his right to the warning track and making a great back-hand stab to rob Spittola... a good sign.
Kris Johnson had two K's but gave up the first run of the game. BC leads 1-0... they have never beaten the Red Sox in spring training.
More on Junichi Tazwa from Kilgore and Tito:
Kilgore - He sort of stops when his hands for a moment when they're spread furthest apart, then starts up again. It's a little hitch, but sound otherwise. The Sox have not tried to break him of this. Francona, ealier today:
"We don't do anything with anybody the first week, whether it's a young player coming from minor league camp. If you look at the Japanese pitchers, they seem to have some uniqueness to their deliveries. But the guys that are good, they all get to the same spot. Daisuke may give you an extra one of these (up-and-down hand motion), but when he's right, he's at the same spot all the time. They all get to where they're supposed to."
2:14 PM - The Red Sox have taken a 3-1 lead thanks to a 2-run double by Chavez and an RBI single by Navarro...
Rocco Baldelli just struck out for the second time today - ouch.
2:17 PM - Chris Carter just hit a bases-clearing, three-run double to right. Nice stroke. It's 6-1, Red Sox.
Kilgore: Carter is a good name to watch. He's got a sweet swing, and Francona has said he loves his intensity/work ethic. Good come through with a key pinch hit or two this season.
As I mentioned earlier today, I think the watching Carter, Wilkerson and Bailey fight for a bench spot might be more exciting than the Lugo/Lowrie battle for short stop.
2:40 PM - Yamaico Navarro just crushed the first home run of the season... he's having a heck of game. Click here for his Sox Prospects report.
Final Score: Red Sox 7, Boston College 1
