The Bottom Line polled Red Sox bloggers from across the Nation and asked them five questions about the upcoming season. You can find all the answers here.
Below are the answers to Question 5 :
4) Who will win the AL East?
Kent from Boston Blogger - Yankees
Peter from Peter's Red Sox Forever - In this order...NYY, Boston, Tampa Bay... (wildcard will be the Sox)
JS from Baseball Heavy - Probably Boston.
Matt from Fenway West - The Sox of course.
Michael from Sox Addict - The Red Sox of course. Gotta have faith!
Bob from Boston Sports Media Watch - Baltimore. The David Pauley trade and Gregg Zaun signing are all the O's need to raise them to the top. No? Okay, they have no shot - just like last year's Rays. Remember all those self-glossing pundits who spent last September claiming they picked the Rays all along, even though you know they didn't? Well, it's my turn. Remember me in September.
Chris from Boston Sports Buzz - I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rays repeat. They lost a couple key members of last year's ridiculous bullpen, but they got significantly stronger in the middle of the lineup with the addition of Pat Burrell. The corps of the team remains intact, and I'm still not convinced the Yankees are better rotation-wise one through five (but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part). It'll be a three-team race once again, but I still see Joe Maddon's crew as the team to beat.
Ian from Sox & Dawgs - Well with the Yankees going out and spending a bazillion dollars in free agents, the answer should be them. I don't see it that way though. The AL East is more competitive now with the Rays who will need to have another year like last year to compete. To me the Yankees have done this before and don't have anything to show for it. I expect this trend to continue. Not to sound like a homer at all but I think the Red Sox win the AL East. I've said all this offseason that re-signing Jason Varitek was what this club needed to get back to the top of the division. I like the pieces in place that we have now. This club is ready to get back to the postseason.
Jeff from The House That Dewey Built - Boston. The Yankees and Tampa should be right there, but the Jays didn't improve at all and the Orioles aren't close yet. It really could be any of the top three teams, and I honestly believe that the talent is close enough that you have to look at which team will be the healthiest, which for my own sanity must be Boston.
Dan from Red Sox Monster - Yankees. Sorry, but when you consider they added not only the best bat available on the free agent market, but a proven ace who dominated again in 2008, I can't help but think they'll own the regular season. With their thin bullpen, the playoffs could be a different story for them, though.
Evan from Firebrand of the AL - Red Sox by two games or less.
Cameron from Comcast's Wicked Good Sports - The Yankees will win 125 games and the American League East. Then they'll get swept in the playoffs.
Bottom Line: I just wanted to get this post up... my pick? The Sox... injuries will kill the Yankees and the Rays will battle them for the WC spot.
