So you guys may have noticed that it's been quiet here at The Bottom Line as of late...
Well, I bought a house and it took me a full week to pass papers and move in... and, like a junkie, I itched and scratched my way through that week woth out a TV or internet access.
But I'm back!
But the it has not been a happy homecoming... the Sox slipped 2.5 games back of the Yankees, the offense looks like a collection of zombies from a bad horror flick and John Smoltz is now 1-5 against a collection of the league's worst offenses: BAL, OAK, WAS, KAN and TEX.
I was happy to see Buchholz get more time in the bigs, though not at the expense of Wake hitting the DL. Wake could be back in the rotation as early as Sunday August 2nd and I'm starting to think that Buchholz should stay and Smoltz should get the bump... but where would he go?
The bullpen has been solid and mixing him into the pen would likely mean bumping Daniel Bard, who should NOT be moved right now. I don't know what Smoltz has in his contract in regards to more time in Triple A, but I don't that is an option... so instead, we will see Buchholz sent back to Pawtucket while Smoltz throws games like yesterday's 6-2 loss.
One other option would be to trade Brad Penny, but at this point, he's a better pitcher than Smoltz, so why trade him away...
Bottom Line: Smoltz thinks he can still win in the bigs, Tito and Farrell do too, so we're all gonna have to wait this thing out and hope for the best:
"I can promise you, I've been in holes before, and I will get out of them if the opportunity is afforded, Smoltz said after yesterday's game. "But at the same time, this city and this team is trying to win a championship. Whatever has to take place - and I'm not saying anything [more] than this - I believe I'm going to get it done."
Thanks for hanging around guys... more to come now that I'm back in the saddle.
