I know Jason Bay is hitting .190 with 63 at-bats in July and now owns a .253 average. And I know Kevin Youkilis was hitting .317 in June 30th and now he's hitting .292 thanks to an 0 for 11 skid in his last three games. And I know Big Papi continues to hover below the .250 mark and that second have explosion we hoped for doesn't look like it's coming...
But Josh Beckett is 6-0 at Fenway Park this year. Opponents are hitting just .196 against him at the Fens and the A's aren't exactly crushing the ball... at home or away (.250 BA, 28th / .249 BA away).
Beckett has been wheeling and dealing for two months now, but he was unable to secure his 12th victory of the season, despite lasting eight solid innings in Texas his last time out. Beckett allowed four runs in the start, but the Red Sox offense couldn't get to Tommy Hunter and couple of RPs I've never heard of.
Beckett would certainly welcome a few quick runs tonight when his team steps in against Trevor Chaill tonight, but I don't think he's going to need more than three to secure the win.
But if you're wondering... Cahill allowed four runs on four hits and three walks through 5.1 innings of work the last time he came to Boston. He's also 1-3 with a 5.35 ERA on the road. And lefties like to face him - Ortiz and Drew both took him deep last game and southpaws are hitting .291 against him.
Bottom Line: A four-game set... against the A's... at home... might be just what the doctor ordered for this offense.
Keep an eye on the Rays/Yankees series as well...
