After lighting up Spring Training, Josh Beckett's regular seasoon got off to a rough start.
But "Commander Kickass of the F@#k Yeah Brigade" is back.
Beckett fanned eight batters on the day and held the Twins to just three hits through seven innings in yesterday's 3-1 victory at the Metrodome, but the tell tale sign that the Commander is back was his ornery disposition on the mound.
Both catchers and managers were tossed from this game and Varitek was ejected for trying to keep the peace between Beckett and home plate umpire Todd Tichenor. When asked what kind of pleasantries he exchanged with Tichenor, Beckett simply replied:
"Just some baseball terms."
Bottom Line: Micheal Silverman summed things up pretty well in his peiece for the Herald:
Beckett's value to the Red Sox cannot be overstated. After a first month of inconsistency, Beckett's May has been nearly perfect. In five starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA, and he is beginning to pitch to the level that helped lead the Red Sox to a world championship in 2007. His record is 5-2, his ERA dropped from 7.22 to 4.60 this month and despite the lack of contributions from Lester and Matsuzaka, Beckett and the Sox own a half-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East this morning.
