Nick Cafardo had an interesting thought in his Sunday column for the Globe:
John Lackey could be a key figure in both teams’ plans. If the Sox acquire him, it would allow them to package Clay Buchholz in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez or Miguel Cabrera, if he becomes available. Buchholz is the chip most teams want in a megadeal. While I'm not sure signing Lackey for 4 years and $80M is a good idea, it would enable them to trade Buchholz for A-Gon... and it would give them leverage in 2010 when Josh Beckett looks for a new deal.
Personally, I'd rather wait and re-sign Beckett, but if Jed Hoyer is open to moving Gonzalez, Theo would be foolish not to make an offer.
The problem with this theory is that the Red Sox also need to sign a left fielder, preferably Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, both of whom will cost around $60-$80M themselves.
Bottom Line: I don't see the Sox signing Lackey and Bay/Holliday unless they can move Lowell or Ortiz in the process... which they would only do if they were planning a trade for Gonzalez, Cabrera or the like.
What do you guys think? Would you sign Lackey and trade Buchholz for A-Gon?
