Yesterday we talked about Buchholz as one of the best pitchers in baseball over the past month. He solidified that with six shutout innings and eight strikeouts last night in a 10-3 win over the Royals, but Buchhy has really been locked in for 10 starts now. With last night's start, Buchholz has held opponents to one run or less in 7 of his last 10 starts. It should be noted that he took the loss in his only two match-ups against playoff caliber teams (DET, NYY) but that was in early August and Sabathia and Verlander blanked the Red Sox offense in both of those outings, while Clay held the bad guys to three total earned runs.
Buchholz has earned his spot as the Game 3 starter in the postseason and I like his chances against any of the other Gsme 3options for the opposing teams: Andy Pettite/Joba Chamberlain, Scott Kazmir/Joe Saunders, Rick Porcello/Jarrod Washburn.
Especially if the offense keeps clicking like it has. Big Papi hit his 26th ding dong last night and passed the 90 RBI mark with 3 runs batted in. That's 2 homers and 7 RBI in the last two games... David sure has picked the right time to get hot again.
Martinez extedned his hitting streak to 23 games and Pedroia extended his to 16 games with an RBI double in the 6th. And Ellsbury remained red hot with three more hits two stolen bases - giving him 66 on the season with 10 games left.
Bottom Line: The Royals hurt themselves with five errors, but let's face it, the Red Sox were gonna win this game. It was a good night for the Sox, but Ramirez' 3-run 8th was a little concerning. Ram Ram has been solid over all, but that was his thrid ugly performance this month... we can't have that in October.
The magic number is now at 3 with another loss by the Rangers... now on to the Bronx!
