Apparently, Jason Varitek broke his foot in Wednesday's game against the Rays. The Globe confirmed the story around midnight last night and with Tek joining Martinez (thumb) on he DL, the Red Sox were desperately searching for catching help.

Millsie to the rescue.

The Sox traded IF Angel Sanchez to the Astros for former Sox backstop Kevin Cash. Cash will joining fellow journeyman Gustavo Molina as the Sox catching tandem... ugh.

Cash hit .204 with a pair of homers in 20 games (54ABs) with Houston this year. Personally, I would have rather seen the Sox trade for actual cash and simply pay off the umpires for the next 6 weeks. How much do you think 15 wins would cost? That would get us about a .500 record through July...

With 10 guys on the DL, including Beckett, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Martinez, Varitek, Hermida and Delcarmen, that means we'll see plenty of MacDonald, Nava, Patterson, Hall, Cash and Molina over the next 4-6 weeks.

V-Mart and Beckett could be back after the All Star break, but it would be nice to get "The Amazing Disappearing Ellsbury" back soon as well. You have to give alot of credit to Theo and his staff for finding all these rookies and no-name players that have helped out this season, but the pressure will now be on the starters to keep games close. We're down to Youk, Beltre and Papi for offense right now, so anything more than 4 runs per game is gonna feel like a miracle.

Bottom Line: If the Sox can battle through this and make the playoffs, it will be one of the coolest stories in recent history... and it may give us that "underdog" edge we lost after the 2004 WS.

Fingers crossed.
