The Celtics lost Game 7 in LA last night...
The Red Sox won and pulled to within 2 games of the AL East leading Yankees and Rays last night...
Millions of gallons of oil continue to spew into theocean...
...but nobody will be talking about that today.
Today Manny Ramirez returns to Boston.
Am I the only one that thinks this is the most over-hyped story in sports right now?
I get it. Manny was a huge part of our success over the past decade, but he pouted his way off the team and got busted for steroids... it's a compelling story. But a week's worth of coverage seems a bit much to me.
The big question: Will you cheer or boo Manny if you're at the Fens this weekend?
Most cheered Johnny Damon, even after he left us to sign with the Yankees for more money. The Sox and the fans still have chapped lips from kissing Nomar's ass during his return to Boston earlier this year... even after he pouted his way out of town in 2004. Even Roger Clemens got a Standing O while finishing his regular season career as a Yankee... pitching in Boston... while winning.
My guess is you'll see a healthy 50/50 mix of cheers and boos this weekend, making this "captivating moment" anything but.
And Manny will be relatively oblivious to the whole thing.
Meh.
Here's a great read from ESPN's Gordon Edes about all of this. Lots of good quotes from all kinds of folks. Here's two:
David Newhan: "I bet they give him a standing O," he said. "I bet they're good to him. For some reason, people love him, you know? One of the oddities in life, you get busted for doing steroids, you show up for a game in Albuquerque, and people cheer for you. Go figure. People love him."Seth Mnookin: "A prediction I will make: He'll receive a boisterous standing O from the crowd. In that regard, at least, I've always thought the reputation Boston fans have for being hard-nosed is a load of crap."
