Joe Mauer just signed an 8-year, $184 million deal, making Victor Martinez the best catcher available this offseason... should he choose to test the market.
Martinez says he likes playing in Boston and would prefer to stay here, but can the Sox convince him to sign now and not listen to other offers? If they can, my guess is the starting point will be 4 years and $10 million per year... I'd be willing to pay a little more to keep V-Mart here until Wagner or Exosito are ready, but are the Red Sox?
The other factor to consider here is Josh Beckett. The Sox would like to re-sign both Martinez and Beckett, but they will also need money for Beltre or a new 3B, a possible extension for Adrian Gonzalez if they trade for him, and $12M for Big Papi's option (or at least a few mil' for a new DH)... among other things in 2011.
Knowing all that, how high are you willing to go to keep Martinez?
Cast your vote in the upper lefthand corner and spread the word... the more the votes the better!
