Some of you might not know this, but if you've read this blog from the beginning, you know that I read the occasional funny book.

To be honest, I haven't read too may comics lately, but there is a MUST READ book coming out this Wednesday and I'm doing my part to spread the word.

About a year ago, world-renowned author and Red Sox diehard Stephen King decided to try his hand at writing a comic book. If you've ever read a Stephen King story, you know this comic won't have much in the way of bright-colored costumes and happy endings... and that's why it's going to be awesome.

The book is called American Vampire and the main character, Skinner Sweet, is anything but. Here's a small piece of an interview King recently did with Shannon Donnely of The Daily Beast:

Tomorrow, Stephen King and Scott Snyder will turn loose American Vampire, a new DC Comics series about a Wild West outlaw who’s a sociopath even before he gets vamped. This fresh, rough-and-tumble breed of vampire will rip out throats and hearts, but they most assuredly won’t sparkle - sorry Twilight fans.

“There’s been a whole spate of vampire stories where the vampires are kind of like boy toys, and they’re kind of beautiful, and you want to kind of pet them and take them home with you,” Stephen King exclusively tells The Daily Beast, in his first interview on his new project.

While King has made some forays into comics before - notably the adaptation of his Dark Tower series, which also deals with vampires and a Wild West theme - American Vampire marks the first time he has done an actual comic script. King’s arc will trace the origins of the first American vampire, Skinner Sweet, as he goes fang-to-fang with even nastier vamps, a group out to get rich by damming up a river to create a new town. “It’s really the vampire as American capitalist gone totally wild.”

Bottom Line: King is trying something new with this venture into comics... I recommend you try something new yourselves this Wednesday and check this book out. You'll be able to find it comic book stores across the country, and if you're afraid of comic stores, you'll be able to buy the complete story in a Collectors Edition from any book store come October.
